New Sidewalk Shed Height Requirements

Local Law 47 of 2025 (LL47), effective August 15, 2025, raises the required minimum clear ceiling height for new sidewalk sheds from 8 feet to 12 feet.
The change applies to all sidewalk shed construction documents submitted on or after August 15. Existing sheds do not need to be modified.
The higher clearance aims to improve visibility, accessibility, and the overall pedestrian experience while maintaining safety during construction and façade work. The law allows flexibility when the 12-foot height would interfere with a building’s required light, air, or egress—for example, when shed decking blocks windows, vents, or fire escapes. In such cases, the registered design professional (RDP) may approve a reduced height between 8 and 12 feet, provided that safety and accessibility are not compromised.
Additional provisions clarify that lighting fixtures extending up to 8 inches below the deck and bracing meeting certain placement criteria are excluded from height measurements. The law also reinforces that sidewalk sheds must not block fire escapes or exit routes.🀰
